◆トピック：研究会・総会のご案内（３月７日（土））

　次回は研究会および総会を３月７日（土）に開催します。まず、報告は井口博充さん（大東文化大学）による、アジア系アメリカ人をめぐる教育言説についてです。また、2015年度最後の研究会ということで、総会を予定しております。例年どおり事業報告、会計報告等が行われる予定です。各会員の今年度の活動報告・情報交換の時間も取る予定です。年に一度の総会ですので、会員の皆様におかれましてはぜひご参加くださいますようお願い申し上げます。

（１）研究発表：13：00から15：00
　テーマ：「アジア系アメリカ人をめぐる教育言説と『タイガー・マザー』」
　発表者：井口博充さん（大東文化大学）
　概要：私が、これまで関心を持ってきたのは、異文化（あるいはマイノリティ文化）に対するステレオタイプを社会との関係から読み解くことである。本発表では、近年のアメリカのアジア系の人々の教育に関する社会的な言説、モデル・マイノリティ言説について考察する。
　具体的には、近年アメリカでベスト・セラーとなった中国系アメリカ人2世のエイミー・チュアが書いた『タイガー・マザー』に現れる言説をモデル・マイノリティ言説の最近のバージョンの一つとしてとして位置付ける。そして、まず『タイガー・マザー』に現れる言説的特徴を検討する。次に、その言説が流通するアメリカ社会の社会的文脈、その言説の与える社会的効果を検討する。さらに『タイガー・マザー』言説がアメリカの人種政策や成功観など他の社会的言説とどのように関わっているのかについて、明らかにしていきたい。

Educational Discourses on Asian Americans: Critiquing Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

In this presentation, I critically examine Amy Chua’s bestseller, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (hereafter, Tiger Mother) as a recent version of the “model minority” discourse. The model minority discourse represents Asian Americans in such a way as to discredit affirmative action policy in the US. First, I examine the main features of model minority discourse for Asians in the US, including “smartness,” “hard-working,” and “obedience.” Then, I apply this concept to Tiger Mother and find that those features are exactly the aspects emphasized in the book. Also, I discuss the background social context of the discourse in Tiger Mother and its effects on the US public controversy over child rearing. I discuss the recent increase of Asian immigrants in the US and the high educational achievement of Asian Americans. In addition, as part of the public controversy, I show how the strict, parent-controlled child rearing promoted in Tiger Mother is pitted against liberal child-centered child rearing. Finally, I explore the intertextuality or possible links to other kinds of discourses including discourses of child rearing, Asian culture, affirmative action, and others. The minority discourse in Tiger Mother may have some affinity with the discourse of anti-affirmative action groups that claim that Asian Americans are treated unfairly at the admission of elite universities because of affirmative action policies. In conclusion, I point out that the Tiger Mother discourse promotes a conservative view of education and reifies stereotypes of Asian Americans.
